Floor Screeding
Over 20 years experience in the floor screeding industry,Every floor screed is laid with a laser level for optimum accuracy,We are very passionate about what we do and pride ourselves on giving our clients the highest levels of quality at affordable prices. We have worked for a host of major companies.bringing a wealth of knowledge and a top quality finish to all our work.I have spent many years mastering my trade and spent alot of that time putting right the jobs that others have done wrong. Getting the mix right it critical, to wet and it wont go flat and to dry it will have no strength and crumble away. There is a lot of work in every screed we lay and pride ourselves in leaving the highest quality finish on every job we do.
Traditional floor screed consists of part aggregate (sharp sand) and cement mixed at different ratios depending on specification. Most floor screeds are laid at 4 to 1 ratio
Nowadays floor screed is usually reinforced with Polypropylene fibres (PPF)
which has became more common than wire mesh which used to be used to strengthen floor screed.
Traditional floor screed is a semi dry mixture laid with an aluminium straight edge, plastic float and a floor trowel or power float.
Most screeders will use a laser level set up to a datum and use a laser receiver or measuring staff to get the correct measurement down to achieve finish floor level (FFL).
Traditional sand and cement screeds can also be laid to falls in wet rooms and for disabled access into buildings.
There are different systems for laying traditional floor screed,Floating, bonded or partially bonded.
Bonded screeds are laid on a scabbled concrete base, A floor scabbler is used to take off the surface of the concrete removing any loose impediments and roughing up the surface so the floor screed bonds to the base better, A Hoover is then used to suck up any remaining dust, Once floor is roughed up enough and free of dust the PVA/SBR and cement is mixed to form a slurry which is generously put around the base ensuring every single part is covered, Then the floor screed can be laid.
Partially bonded screeds are basically the same as a bonded screed but without the base being scabbled.
Unbonded screeds are not bonded in any way, DPM ( damp proof membrane ) is used to separate the concrete base from the floor screed, this way any cracking in the base shouldn't effect the screed.
Floating screed is one of the most common and are laid on some form of insulation like kingspan or celotex but there are many different types of other insulation to choose from,Your architect or building designer should specify what they think is best for your build.
Heated screeds, Most heated screeds are a floating screed with underfloor heating pipes laid over the top of the insulation,Most underfloor heating is hot water going through a loop of pipes under the screed connected to a manifold where you can adjust the temperature. In some cases the underfloor heating is a loop of specialized electrical cable laid under the screed. If you would like a warm floor underfoot in the winter then a heated screed is the way to go.
What ever floor screed you go for it is recommended that you use an expansion strip around the edges and around any columns.
